<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I got another Japanese book review here today. The kind people at Tuttle publishing has sent me this English translated Japanese sewing book last month. Finally, I can sit down to do a proper review of the book.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This book is by Yuki Araki (荒木由紀<span style="color: dimgrey; font-family: MS Pゴシック;"><span style="line-height: 13px;">)</span></span>, one of my favourite author. I've got 2 of her books: <span style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="line-height: 22px;">きちんと可愛い女の子服 (which goes up to size 160!) and </span></span></span><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="line-height: 22px;">ほんのりsweet 女の子の服 (up to size 140). Both of these books are in Japanese and I really love the fabric and style in her books. The author loves to add in her personal notes and comments for each design which I sometimes find it hard to interpret in the Japanese version since my Japanese skills is just basic. So, I'm glad to have this english translated version that gives me insight to her design and style.</span></span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Quattrocento Sans, arial, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px;"><br /></span></span>

<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Quattrocento Sans, arial, serif;"><span style="line-height: 22px;">This sewing book is for size 90 to 120. In Japanese sewing book, they usually take reference to the child height as a guide to choose the size. My youngest is at size 110 but her height is 120 so I use 110 bodice and added in the length.</span></span><br />

<br />
Before you start sewing, the book include some sewing notes and techniques and how to read the symbols in the book. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UbpimWxXggc/VI7jlEbmVYI/AAAAAAAAFKk/1o0-w8FFQAA/s1600/SAM_2186-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UbpimWxXggc/VI7jlEbmVYI/AAAAAAAAFKk/1o0-w8FFQAA/s1600/SAM_2186-1.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Please note that all Japanese sewing book has no seam allowance included in the pattern pieces so you need to trace your own before you start cutting! Usually it is 1cm for all except the hem (2 or 3cm) or if the edge is bias bind then there is zero seam allowance. So take note of the required seam allowance on each cutting diagrams.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DxTQ7VyYVJM/VI7jn4UeFXI/AAAAAAAAFKs/-HHc50hpup8/s1600/SAM_2187-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DxTQ7VyYVJM/VI7jn4UeFXI/AAAAAAAAFKs/-HHc50hpup8/s1600/SAM_2187-1.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Quattrocento Sans, arial, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Quattrocento Sans, arial, serif;"><span style="line-height: 22px;">As I don't have the Japanese version of this book, I can't compare how different this is with the original book. For most Japanese version, usually there is one big diagram on the sewing step and then cutting layout. But in the English version, they have a separate diagram for each step. So it makes it really clear on how follow the sewing instruction. I really love the diagrams in the Japanese sewing book as it is really clear and each small steps are also labelled and index for easy reference.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Quattrocento Sans, arial, serif;"><span style="line-height: 22px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Quattrocento Sans, arial, serif;"><span style="line-height: 22px;">There is one photographed step by step for pattern on Sleeveless dress which illustrate how this is done on actual fabric. I find this one useful as they give a full illustration on how to sew a shirt placket and stand collar.</span></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6AGxE1FBIKY/VI7lq_ghlfI/AAAAAAAAFK4/Tr2i7TnxwME/s1600/SAM_2180-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6AGxE1FBIKY/VI7lq_ghlfI/AAAAAAAAFK4/Tr2i7TnxwME/s1600/SAM_2180-1.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Quattrocento Sans, arial, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Quattrocento Sans, arial, serif;"><span style="line-height: 22px;">My girl has picked out the floral skirt so I'll be sewing up for her next month. This is a really useful book and I think will make an ideal Christmas present for any home sewist. You can find this at the big bookstore like Kinokuniya or at Amazon. </span></span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Quattrocento Sans, arial, serif;"><span style="line-height: 22px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Quattrocento Sans, arial, serif;"><span style="line-height: 22px;">I hope Tuttle publishing can continue to translate Japanese sewing book so that more sewist can enjoy them. Personally I hope that they can translate this book "Girls at a Recital!" by Kawai Kimiko (hint hint!). I've used this book last year for <a href="http://www.mommysewpretty.blogspot.sg/2014/04/piano-recital-dress.html" target="_blank">my girl</a> and for this year's recital I also use their patterns and the looks are gorgeous. I'll share more in the next post!</span></span><br />

<br />
<br />
I've tried to resist and resist...but one year later, I finally sew an Elsa costume for my girl. The pattern is self drafted for my 4 year old.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZWszS8LBDVg/VFYwHmqLrVI/AAAAAAAAFI0/x-VQDtsFKh4/s1600/20141031_072959-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZWszS8LBDVg/VFYwHmqLrVI/AAAAAAAAFI0/x-VQDtsFKh4/s1600/20141031_072959-1.jpg" height="400" width="252" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
Here it is. All sparkly and princessy. I bought all the fabric from Arab Street. I think all in, I spent less than $30, including the crystal snowflake motif that I iron on the skirt and cape. Here are the detailed photos.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qfyOaxvdC1c/VFJWMSftgTI/AAAAAAAAFGs/YcEq4yvnpdk/s1600/20141025_212554-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qfyOaxvdC1c/VFJWMSftgTI/AAAAAAAAFGs/YcEq4yvnpdk/s1600/20141025_212554-1.jpg" height="640" width="363" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
The back view with the cape attached to the back bodice. The cape is actually one piece organza which I slit open 5" gap to allow more room to slip in the dress.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-z2NdwteL-t4/VFJXt8KpbrI/AAAAAAAAFHI/6QIWp6G9PCs/s1600/20141025_212750-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-z2NdwteL-t4/VFJXt8KpbrI/AAAAAAAAFHI/6QIWp6G9PCs/s1600/20141025_212750-1.jpg" height="640" width="337" /></a></div>
<br />
Look at the snowflake crystals on the cape! so pretty.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-z4SYfyaoMkc/VFJYGx-yiiI/AAAAAAAAFHQ/-dCzi-vwdnQ/s1600/20141030_200131-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-z4SYfyaoMkc/VFJYGx-yiiI/AAAAAAAAFHQ/-dCzi-vwdnQ/s1600/20141030_200131-1.jpg" height="640" width="352" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I've document some notes below on how i sew the dress for my future reference. I use 4 types of fabric:<br />
<ul>
<li>white chiffon 1/2 yard</li>
<li>bluish green fabric with sequins 1/4 yard</li>
<li>satin in turquoise colour 2 yard</li>
<li>bluish green organza 1 yard</li>
</ul>
<br />
<br />
Bodice<br />
I used chiffon which I did french seams since it frays like crazy and the white is too transparent. It was my first time doing french seams and I pondered a lot on the sequence of sewing. I sew the chiffon bodice first and then attach the sequin bodice on top. The sequin bodice is very flimsy so I baste it on the turquoise satin first before attaching. I did the same for the back sequin bodice.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QHcedbiGB8k/VFJXb-N-aTI/AAAAAAAAFHA/ohCbP1vGR48/s1600/20141025_123724-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QHcedbiGB8k/VFJXb-N-aTI/AAAAAAAAFHA/ohCbP1vGR48/s1600/20141025_123724-1.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I added a belt as I realised that I cut my bodice too short!<br />
<br />
Cape<br />
I decided to just use the full width of my organza and cut the required length from the sequin bodice to the hem of the skirt. Since I use the full width with the selvage, there is no need to treat the side seams. But I did use lighter to burn the edge for the top and bottom so that it will not fray. See the wavy curves where the fire burnt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IRjhC6R3g8g/VFJZPTq5AuI/AAAAAAAAFHc/K-m4ub3vJ9s/s1600/20141025_130445-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IRjhC6R3g8g/VFJZPTq5AuI/AAAAAAAAFHc/K-m4ub3vJ9s/s1600/20141025_130445-1.jpg" height="640" width="296" /></a></div>
<br />
I did a 6" slit in the middle of the cape to allow more room for my girl to unzip her dress. To prevent fraying, I use satin stitch to go over the edges, placing interfacing below my stitch to reinforce the stitch. Then I just cut off the excess after sewing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0TM4AijXRxI/VFJaici16WI/AAAAAAAAFHw/eyPo6TTqLKg/s1600/20141025_134823-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0TM4AijXRxI/VFJaici16WI/AAAAAAAAFHw/eyPo6TTqLKg/s1600/20141025_134823-1.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Next, I gathered the top edge of the organza and pin it to the sequin bodice, making sure I overlap the front by 5" on both sides. The red clover clip is where the middle slit is. Sew the cape to the bodice/belt but don't sew over the slit. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-K93SCbjigD8/VFJZzphkNmI/AAAAAAAAFHk/Q_mcNh63xkM/s1600/20141025_132505-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-K93SCbjigD8/VFJZzphkNmI/AAAAAAAAFHk/Q_mcNh63xkM/s1600/20141025_132505-1.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's how the cape looks in front. The cape was sewn to the sequin bodice before attaching to the chiffon bodice. Then I gathered the skirts and attached to the bodice. Insert zipper and its done.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
I thought the skirt needs some sparks so I iron on some snowflake crystals on the front skirt as well as the cape. It was really easy. Bought all the iron on at the shop at Arab street too. I think for the big ones it was 4 for $7 while the 10 small ones was $6 I think.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wQpbCwpOCFA/VFJbtdui5lI/AAAAAAAAFH8/Dsbq_qaN3Yk/s1600/20141025_212628-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wQpbCwpOCFA/VFJbtdui5lI/AAAAAAAAFH8/Dsbq_qaN3Yk/s1600/20141025_212628-1.jpg" height="640" width="360" /></a></div>
<br />
The crystal came all nicely position which you will peel off the paper backing and place the sticky side on the fabric.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MLMeaq93r3w/VFJcM5rrgkI/AAAAAAAAFIE/da8MNiZs1KA/s1600/20141030_195905-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MLMeaq93r3w/VFJcM5rrgkI/AAAAAAAAFIE/da8MNiZs1KA/s1600/20141030_195905-1.jpg" height="400" width="225" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-b6mmxinienQ/VFJck6IGpMI/AAAAAAAAFIM/TOs9OB_gTKA/s1600/20141030_195955-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-b6mmxinienQ/VFJck6IGpMI/AAAAAAAAFIM/TOs9OB_gTKA/s1600/20141030_195955-1.jpg" height="400" width="225" /></a></div>
<br />
Then you place an ironing cloth over it and iron on high heat for like 10 seconds. You can try peeling at 5-8 seconds to see if all are stick on. If not, iron over again. Peel off the sticky paper when done.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Has it been 3 months since I've been away!?? Time flies.. the thing is, I lose my sewing mojo...<br />
<br />
Tutoring a Primary 3 kid add with Term 3 examinations mean zero sewing time for me. I hardly could find the energy to sew. But the good news is, something caught my eyes and I just can't resist the temptation. It's the <a href="http://www.purlbee.com/2014/07/24/corinnes-thread-city-gym-shorts-for-all-ages/" target="_blank">City Gym Shorts by Purl Bee</a>.<br />
<br />
It was seriously so cute. I'm also not a gym person but I can't resist these cut shorts. They do as lounge shorts for me and it only needs so little fabric to make one. I have lots of fat quarters laying around and these are just the right project to use them.<br />
<br />
For my kids, I use the waist measurements to determine the size. For mine I use my hip measurements and just adjust the elastic bands since I don't like my shorts to be too tight or short. It worked out fine.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-f2w4GFimKis/VAQ47aGfzFI/AAAAAAAAFCw/7nTCSBK5OR8/s1600/SAM_2151-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-f2w4GFimKis/VAQ47aGfzFI/AAAAAAAAFCw/7nTCSBK5OR8/s1600/SAM_2151-1.jpg" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This one is for my 4 year old, using the 6-7 year old size since that correspond to her waist. She is a cubby girl. I use the Narwhal in Bloom from Sarah Jane's Out to Sea fabric collection, at the front and match with a lilac cotton I've in my stash. I also use the Narwhal for the waistband but I got it upside down! oops.<br />
<br />
The instruction is super clear. I attached the binding the traditional way as I'm not so confident that I can catch all the raw edges one go. I think the making of the bias tapes is the longest process but the final product is worth it! I just watch korean drama as I iron them into the fold.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cLZlyoYyewo/VAQ5YfILLyI/AAAAAAAAFC4/KAMb3MIsHq8/s1600/SAM_2154-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cLZlyoYyewo/VAQ5YfILLyI/AAAAAAAAFC4/KAMb3MIsHq8/s1600/SAM_2154-1.jpg" height="438" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Next up, is for my 9 year old which I use the 11 year old measurements. She picked the dog fabric herself. I got these at a sale at Spotlight for $4/metre, thinking of gifting them to my girl as she is learning to sew. The blue cotton is from my stash, left over from my <a href="http://mommysewpretty.blogspot.sg/2012/07/iris-shorts-another-sorbetto.html" target="_blank">Iris shorts project</a>. <br />
<br />
I change the way I sew the waistband because I don't like to leave the gap on the right side for the elastic band. Instead, I left a gap in the wrong side of the waistband when I sew it to the shorts. Then, when I turn over and sew on the right side, i just make sure that I don't accidentally sew up the gap behind. After I insert the elastic, I then sew up the gap. It looks neater on the outside.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xGmtxUaXV-A/VAQ6c0UVS3I/AAAAAAAAFDE/OubB2TlJlrE/s1600/SAM_2157-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xGmtxUaXV-A/VAQ6c0UVS3I/AAAAAAAAFDE/OubB2TlJlrE/s1600/SAM_2157-1.jpg" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Lastly, I sew one for myself. I'm so happy that Purl Bee had one in woman size. I used Sarah Jane's Summer Ride from her Wee Wander range. It was gorgeous! I was hesitant to cut it up at first and had plans to make a dress or a bag but I'm not sure if I will dare to wear this bright dress so a short it is!<br />
<br />
There is quite a bit of ease in the pattern cause when I choose my hip size, it was very loose fitting and the waistband measurement was 35"! So, I adjusted elastic band size. I think the loose fitting suits me but if you like to be more close fitting, do check against the paper pattern before you cut into your precious fabric.<br />
<br />
All in all, I really enjoyed sewing these shorts. If you use store bought bias tapes, I would say it is a super quick sew. I got order from my sisters so back to sewing again. I think I get the most satisfaction from sewing for people who appreciate handmade items!<br />
<br />

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2le7DLyCPbc/VAQ80V1a40I/AAAAAAAAFDQ/AZObyK3lqkA/s1600/SAM_2159-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2le7DLyCPbc/VAQ80V1a40I/AAAAAAAAFDQ/AZObyK3lqkA/s1600/SAM_2159-1.jpg" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Wqmfo9iZOj8/U5iCSOYx4vI/AAAAAAAAExk/qWcUpbxCqko/s1600/Hoodies+Collage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Wqmfo9iZOj8/U5iCSOYx4vI/AAAAAAAAExk/qWcUpbxCqko/s1600/Hoodies+Collage.jpg" height="211" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm in the mood of sewing fleece hoodies now. Yes, here in hot and humid Singapore! I must be mad but they are so addictive. Especially when the fleece are sold at $6 per metre at Spotlights during the recent 40% sale.<br />
<br />
Recently I realised that my local Spotlight had increase the variety of fabric and there are more interesting print for knit and fleece. Look at all those prints and I can't resist to get some. The fleece is super soft but i think those selling at $9 is of better quality, which I used for the diamond goodies and jellybean hoodies above. The blue floral one is nice but not as soft.<br />
<br />
Okay, let's look that the hoodies individually. The diamond hoodie is made from a pattern in one of my favourite Ottobre issue 4/2012. If you want to sew jackets/hoodies, this issue is pack full with different designs. I've used this pattern before to make the Alphine hoodie for my girl, called "Born to Run" but upgraded the size to 146 for my skinny 12 year old nephew.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vbXHo7sPSOs/U5iDpMR3NTI/AAAAAAAAExw/PfRMxjB55GQ/s1600/20140611_184643-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vbXHo7sPSOs/U5iDpMR3NTI/AAAAAAAAExw/PfRMxjB55GQ/s1600/20140611_184643-1.jpg" height="400" width="225" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It is an unlined hoodie and I left out the drawstring and pockets. I use ribbing for the sleeve cuff and hem. Managed to find a matching colour from my stash. I even have the right length separating zipper in white! Good to always stock up at Daiso once in a while : ) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UMpwSWPuT1g/U5iD8dd13aI/AAAAAAAAEx0/1LuTzoOtWeo/s1600/20140611_184648-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: right;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UMpwSWPuT1g/U5iD8dd13aI/AAAAAAAAEx0/1LuTzoOtWeo/s1600/20140611_184648-1.jpg" height="320" width="224" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I love the diamond print but the fleece is really very shifty. I traced the pattern with the right side facing up so that I have better control of the layout and direction of the print. But it is not easy at times. Thankfully, the fleece is very stretchy so little mistakes are hidden. The hood is lined with single jersey.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YRB_5jNtpB0/U5iEuyRObXI/AAAAAAAAEx8/ju-pAfewkYc/s1600/20140611_184830-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YRB_5jNtpB0/U5iEuyRObXI/AAAAAAAAEx8/ju-pAfewkYc/s1600/20140611_184830-1.jpg" height="400" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For my niece, I made her an unlined hoodie with big pockets, pattern also from the same issue #33. Roxy Royal hoodie jacket. I remove the kangaroo pocket in the pattern and replace it with another pocket from #27 Funny Fox pattern. I also lined the hood with jersey knit and use ribbings for the sleeve cuff, pocket edge and the joint between the hoodie lining and the bodice.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-X5NP1GXY0e4/U5iFIr1mXII/AAAAAAAAEyE/Ge6eVDifqm0/s1600/20140611_184827-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-X5NP1GXY0e4/U5iFIr1mXII/AAAAAAAAEyE/Ge6eVDifqm0/s1600/20140611_184827-1.jpg" height="400" width="220" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The pocket pieces are sewn on top of the front panel and using flatlock stitch to stitch around the edge. But my machine didn't come with that so I decided to insert some pink ric arc between the pocket and main jacket and just zig zag the pockets down. It looks very cute and quite matching right? I'm extremely pleased with my foresight that I have just the perfect powder blue separating zipper in the right length. I got them from Daiso again.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My niece is quite petite so I use size 128 and had enough fabric left over to make a PJ pants for my sister! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zFgRrkWgQD8/U5iGpZ6phqI/AAAAAAAAEyM/BW6nEc_aC_I/s1600/20140611_184920-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zFgRrkWgQD8/U5iGpZ6phqI/AAAAAAAAEyM/BW6nEc_aC_I/s1600/20140611_184920-1.jpg" height="400" width="247" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The pattern is from a Japanese sewing magazine Female Autumn 2013 issue.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NTheuXjy2pw/U5iHX_1NmsI/AAAAAAAAEyU/4qMlwW26Uyk/s1600/female+Collage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NTheuXjy2pw/U5iHX_1NmsI/AAAAAAAAEyU/4qMlwW26Uyk/s1600/female+Collage.jpg" height="200" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used size L and didn't include the hem ribbing as the size for Japanese pattern is for 165 but I'm only 160. The length is just nice and the fit is perfect! I'm surprise how comfy the pant is.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mmaVbY-SMs4/U5iH6tQ21NI/AAAAAAAAEyk/YPGDOw5Oy0U/s1600/2014-06-11+13.58.23-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mmaVbY-SMs4/U5iH6tQ21NI/AAAAAAAAEyk/YPGDOw5Oy0U/s1600/2014-06-11+13.58.23-1.jpg" height="400" width="208" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-EuMicy_FUIw/U5iH0MAJwmI/AAAAAAAAEyc/kWCoX_XAoMs/s1600/2014-06-10+17.03.51-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-EuMicy_FUIw/U5iH0MAJwmI/AAAAAAAAEyc/kWCoX_XAoMs/s1600/2014-06-10+17.03.51-1.jpg" height="400" width="226" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The waistband fits nicely too with the elastic. I just measure my waist and cut the elastic band which i find is a better fit. I left 1" gap at the seams when I sew the waistband and use it to insert the elastic. This gap will be there after you completed the pants so that you can always adjust the elastic as you grow horizontally!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QkkDR71B2BY/U5iIedzzqKI/AAAAAAAAEys/pINTOZ9nADg/s1600/20140611_185002-1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QkkDR71B2BY/U5iIedzzqKI/AAAAAAAAEys/pINTOZ9nADg/s1600/20140611_185002-1.png" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Anyway, back to my hoodie. The 3rd hoodie is for my mum. I owe her one hand made garment. Since I've started sewing, I didn't have courage to sew anything for my mum. She is a sewist so I was afraid that my standard will not meet her expectation. But I'm glad that I can sew her a jacket for her coming oversea trip. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The pattern is from Ottobre Woman Autumn/Winter issue 5/2011 #6. Saturday Chilling hoodie. I use size 40 but took off some length since Ottobre is designed for height 164-172cm. I also didn't use the recommended sleeve cuff but just use the main fabric and create a shorter length cuff. I especially love the pockets which you can't really see from the busy print. The pocket edge is bind with ribbing and it is quite roomy.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-89rFraUprBA/U5iI9m-SP7I/AAAAAAAAEy0/t-R_UkT9nOo/s1600/2014-06-11-00-50-20_photo-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-89rFraUprBA/U5iI9m-SP7I/AAAAAAAAEy0/t-R_UkT9nOo/s1600/2014-06-11-00-50-20_photo-1.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I only bought 1 meter so didn't quite have enough for the whole hoodie so I use the ribbing for the sleeves. I think it works better since the sleeves help to tone down the jacket with the busy print. I'm super super happy that I managed to line the directional print on the front! I also run out of zipper of that length so I use snap buttons which I only had 6, so it was nerve racking and I was so scared of making mistakes. You can hardly see the white snap buttons here. Most proud of the matching print across the front : )</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FHVYaYeadDI/U5iMOQkU5oI/AAAAAAAAEzA/KZTOAVrAto0/s1600/2014-06-11-00-49-51_photo-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FHVYaYeadDI/U5iMOQkU5oI/AAAAAAAAEzA/KZTOAVrAto0/s1600/2014-06-11-00-49-51_photo-1.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I cut the back piece on fold instead of 2 separate pieces to save my fabric. To do that, I straighten the centre back seams (the original design has curve seam lines for better slim fit) so that I can cut on fold. The jacket is also unlined and I bind the hood edge with ribbing as well. I didn't even line the hood since the fleece is so soft and I didn't want to hide them away. The colourful print at the centre seams of the hood create an interesting feature at the back.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ttJXSS6HfXI/U5iMvZErhuI/AAAAAAAAEzI/6Kgj29a5dVk/s1600/2014-06-11-00-50-45_photo-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ttJXSS6HfXI/U5iMvZErhuI/AAAAAAAAEzI/6Kgj29a5dVk/s1600/2014-06-11-00-50-45_photo-1.jpg" height="320" width="281" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So, here are my 3 hoodies. I usually try to cut my patterns and fabric on one night and leave the sewing to another night so that my sewing will not be interrupted. Cutting and tracing really take up a lot of time and energy. I usually lose steam after all the back bending ( I trace on the floor since I don't have such big table).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've just delivered the hoodies to them and I'm happy to see happy recipients of my gifts of love. Sewing hoodies are so fun. It is so additive, believe me. Now, if only I have time to sew one for my hubby and me : ) </div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vXtlx450byg/U48tV4FB64I/AAAAAAAAEtU/B0jXaFxSFlk/s1600/SAM_1780-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vXtlx450byg/U48tV4FB64I/AAAAAAAAEtU/B0jXaFxSFlk/s1600/SAM_1780-1.jpg" height="400" width="247" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I made a dress for myself in May. To be specific, I made a Birthday Dress. The pattern is from this Japanese book that I've used earlier to sew the mock two-piece <a href="http://www.mommysewpretty.blogspot.sg/2013/07/mock-two-piece-dress.html" target="_blank">dress</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QabU3q8i0Hc/UbyOhrdOqfI/AAAAAAAAEA0/FVlsp5FPYa8/s1600/P6150387-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QabU3q8i0Hc/UbyOhrdOqfI/AAAAAAAAEA0/FVlsp5FPYa8/s1600/P6150387-1.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The pattern is a wrapped dress with gathered sleeves. It is really a wrapped dress with ties and all.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hrHyNdYv3VM/UbyRmYe8ylI/AAAAAAAAEBc/J3DS1Tr9Iss/s1600/P6150391-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hrHyNdYv3VM/UbyRmYe8ylI/AAAAAAAAEBc/J3DS1Tr9Iss/s1600/P6150391-1.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
I used a soft linen in mint that I got from Spotlight during sale. I've followed the instruction quite closely except instead of a elastic channel at the sleeves, I just zig zag a slim elastic band directly around the sleeve hem. I cut the elastic after taking measurement of my arm.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-H9iqjtArBYo/U48vC-HeBgI/AAAAAAAAEtg/8MYkEjngVw0/s1600/SAM_1785-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-H9iqjtArBYo/U48vC-HeBgI/AAAAAAAAEtg/8MYkEjngVw0/s1600/SAM_1785-1.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I love the front cross wrapped and it looks very cute with the ties. There are a total of 8 ties to secure them. 2 on the outside and the rest along the waistline and skirt sides.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-h8PBW6dsZpY/U48vS8rIPEI/AAAAAAAAEto/BkOX2hQqkDs/s1600/SAM_1782-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-h8PBW6dsZpY/U48vS8rIPEI/AAAAAAAAEto/BkOX2hQqkDs/s1600/SAM_1782-1.jpg" height="400" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
The sleeves are gathered around the sleeve head and attach to the arm sync. I set the sleeves in flat as I find it easier to work with the elastic.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bRAHEiVJ5IU/U48vsebMkNI/AAAAAAAAEtw/reEv3eK8fPc/s1600/SAM_1786-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bRAHEiVJ5IU/U48vsebMkNI/AAAAAAAAEtw/reEv3eK8fPc/s1600/SAM_1786-1.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the back view. The skirts are gathered around the waist and attached to the bodice .<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CsTWyyz3qDo/U48wHHDGNAI/AAAAAAAAEt4/YZSkTzWH1HY/s1600/SAM_1790-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CsTWyyz3qDo/U48wHHDGNAI/AAAAAAAAEt4/YZSkTzWH1HY/s1600/SAM_1790-1.jpg" height="400" width="191" /></a></div>
<br />
Here I am, wearing my new dress. Sorry for the blurry photo as I took it with my handphone. I wore another slip inside as it was a bit sheer.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5UPB1GRq5VA/U48wU9_u5TI/AAAAAAAAEuA/r-dsX2J8KgI/s1600/20140601_103019-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5UPB1GRq5VA/U48wU9_u5TI/AAAAAAAAEuA/r-dsX2J8KgI/s1600/20140601_103019-1.jpg" height="400" width="277" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Back view. Love the shape of the dress.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hSbeuMwBdfY/U48whhd8MAI/AAAAAAAAEuI/bMz117GwCpE/s1600/20140601_103047-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hSbeuMwBdfY/U48whhd8MAI/AAAAAAAAEuI/bMz117GwCpE/s1600/20140601_103047-1.jpg" height="400" width="242" /></a></div>
<br />
See how secure the ties are. It is really nice fit and I'm so happy with the dress. Light and airy.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-azP19cqYCBo/U48wsv5F0QI/AAAAAAAAEuQ/RN-GuQb1B4g/s1600/20140601_103110-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-azP19cqYCBo/U48wsv5F0QI/AAAAAAAAEuQ/RN-GuQb1B4g/s1600/20140601_103110-1.jpg" height="400" width="261" /></a></div>
<br />
And, before I forget. Here's the 2 winners of the Giveaway. Pardon the blog break. I intend to post on 1 June but it's the school holiday here in Singapore and with the kids out of school, life is out of norm and busy.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-P7eQbpUGJ7A/U48zCrLj0vI/AAAAAAAAEuc/Dd0KeCoHGZs/s1600/2014-06-04-22-50-05_photo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-P7eQbpUGJ7A/U48zCrLj0vI/AAAAAAAAEuc/Dd0KeCoHGZs/s1600/2014-06-04-22-50-05_photo.jpg" height="346" width="400" /></a></div>

[Closed]<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gV8f2j0skF4/U3jqAqFFJ-I/AAAAAAAAEr0/UDu1LHIkX5M/s1600/SAM_1718-teaser.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gV8f2j0skF4/U3jqAqFFJ-I/AAAAAAAAEr0/UDu1LHIkX5M/s1600/SAM_1718-teaser.jpg" height="400" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
So, from the <a href="http://www.mommysewpretty.blogspot.sg/2014/05/japanese-sewing-book-review-basic-black.html" target="_blank">Japanese Sewing Book "Basic Black"</a>, I made this Shawl Collar Peplum Top.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jLWO6tCFMaU/U3tEHZyacDI/AAAAAAAAEsE/qi7vEI35VZ4/s1600/SAM_1727-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jLWO6tCFMaU/U3tEHZyacDI/AAAAAAAAEsE/qi7vEI35VZ4/s1600/SAM_1727-1.jpg" height="640" width="425" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the original pattern from the book. You can see here they gave the recommended fabric and the notions as well as the Sewing Steps. The shaded areas means 'Wrong side facing up'.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5rhjISUkGdY/U3tEaYiQKhI/AAAAAAAAEsM/ZbWivhbfHM0/s1600/SAM_1734-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5rhjISUkGdY/U3tEaYiQKhI/AAAAAAAAEsM/ZbWivhbfHM0/s1600/SAM_1734-1.jpg" height="640" width="441" /></a></div>
<br />
The most complicated part of the sewing is the shawl collar which is illustrated nicely in the diagram given in the book.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gpLal0PqEzo/U3tEx4GuvHI/AAAAAAAAEsU/FZ9yBtt9ACk/s1600/SAM_1735-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gpLal0PqEzo/U3tEx4GuvHI/AAAAAAAAEsU/FZ9yBtt9ACk/s1600/SAM_1735-1.jpg" height="640" width="425" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>Changes I made</b><br />
<br />
1. Change the fabric from Dobby Check to Knit. Can you believe that I don't even have any black fabric at home! Finally I found some black and white stripe knit that I bought from Spotlight a few weeks ago.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GXq7TFWlbpU/U3tQFvroTwI/AAAAAAAAEtA/y5_kkb0NSrw/s1600/SAM_1719-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GXq7TFWlbpU/U3tQFvroTwI/AAAAAAAAEtA/y5_kkb0NSrw/s1600/SAM_1719-1.jpg" height="640" width="425" /></a></div>
<br />
The knit is quite thick so I decided to use this instead and it works out quite well. The only problem I have is the matching of the stripes which was a nightmare. It didn't quite match up at the back but I managed to do better at the side seams. My eyes were swimming when I was cutting out the pieces.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QEACkP9qG_U/U3tIvkHT0zI/AAAAAAAAEsg/_n0m07NgOCM/s1600/SAM_1721-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QEACkP9qG_U/U3tIvkHT0zI/AAAAAAAAEsg/_n0m07NgOCM/s1600/SAM_1721-1.jpg" height="640" width="425" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
2. The 2nd changes that I made was to cut a short rectangle to make it into a peplum top. I just eye ball the length that I want and cut along the white stripe, using the full width of the fabric. It made pleats instead of gathering the skirt to reduce the bulk at the waist.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-w5U7UFtik8g/U3tJxH1LOCI/AAAAAAAAEso/IphRz55Heuo/s1600/SAM_1725-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-w5U7UFtik8g/U3tJxH1LOCI/AAAAAAAAEso/IphRz55Heuo/s1600/SAM_1725-1.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I especially love the shawl collar. The interfacing really makes the collar stands properly. I topstitch the collar to make it lay nicely. I like it that it is not to low and add interest to a normal V neck peplum top.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-p6nvDSPgvPw/U3tKIXfT4YI/AAAAAAAAEsw/yS_DTpeVy14/s1600/SAM_1718-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-p6nvDSPgvPw/U3tKIXfT4YI/AAAAAAAAEsw/yS_DTpeVy14/s1600/SAM_1718-1.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As mentioned in my earlier <a href="http://www.mommysewpretty.blogspot.sg/2014/05/japanese-sewing-book-review-basic-black.html" target="_blank">post</a>, the finished size for each design given in the book really helps me in choosing the right size. I tally my measurements against those on the book, using Bust, Waist and Hip measurements. The size is quite accurate I find. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next up I think I will try to make the Round collar jacket since I really need one for my office.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZWCrbNCbzHA/U3jckpRWLjI/AAAAAAAAEp8/vqsyWuGBPd0/s1600/SAM_1669-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZWCrbNCbzHA/U3jckpRWLjI/AAAAAAAAEp8/vqsyWuGBPd0/s1600/SAM_1669-1.jpg" height="640" width="425" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2E9Xo_fY6u4/U3japFq7UmI/AAAAAAAAEpc/K8irJU90sU0/s1600/SAM_1664-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2E9Xo_fY6u4/U3japFq7UmI/AAAAAAAAEpc/K8irJU90sU0/s1600/SAM_1664-1.jpg" height="640" width="528" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Have you seen this book in the bookshop in town?<br />
<br />
It's a Japanese sewing book packed with 26 patterns for blouse, vests, skirts, dress and jackets, in the classic colour of Black of course!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-V17jlXZ3v6U/U3jbyhweGDI/AAAAAAAAEpo/LxUzjfqCL4E/s1600/SAM_1680-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-V17jlXZ3v6U/U3jbyhweGDI/AAAAAAAAEpo/LxUzjfqCL4E/s1600/SAM_1680-1.jpg" height="425" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And a good news to all japanese sewing book enthusiasts who don't understand Japanese, this book is recently translated to English! You would never had guess that the book was first published in 2005 because the designs are all so edgy and modern.<br />
<br />
I like the book because of the wide range of patterns. There are 5 patterns for Jackets alone!<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<br />
I've not seen the Japanese version so I can't compare the English version. But from my past experiences sewing from Japanese sewing book, this one has a lot more description and all the diagrams and important parts are labelled so you will not be confused.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6ylUVgtgydg/U3jfEqDpVEI/AAAAAAAAEqk/T27s7fJPla0/s1600/SAM_1671-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6ylUVgtgydg/U3jfEqDpVEI/AAAAAAAAEqk/T27s7fJPla0/s1600/SAM_1671-1.jpg" height="425" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The japanese version usually has only measurements in centimetres but the English version comes with both cm and Inches, so you don't have to look for your measuring tapes to translate for you!<br />
<br />
Another plus points for this book is they actually categories the patterns into 3 groups: Loose, fitted or garments with darts and shaping seams. The finished measurements by Bust, Waist and Hip are also given for each patterns which is very useful as this may differs based on the design ease in the patterns.<br />
<br />
The book comes in 4 sizes" XS, S, M, L" and there are 2 pattern sheets folded neatly in the envelope at the back of the book. I find this very useful as the Japanese version usually have the patterns pasted on the first or last page which you have to physically tear them out and so they always dropped out of the book whenever I pull out the books from my shelves.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ur1aTzPiX9k/U3jgmK3tFYI/AAAAAAAAEqw/foenRKIpBKA/s1600/SAM_1678-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ur1aTzPiX9k/U3jgmK3tFYI/AAAAAAAAEqw/foenRKIpBKA/s1600/SAM_1678-1.jpg" height="425" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Further details are given on each pattern sheet, on sizes and how to use the patterns. One thing though, the pattern pieces may not be found on one sheet so you have to tally the number of pieces with the book. I think this is inevitable when you try to squeeze all the patterns in just 2 sheets of paper.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--dwNCCMOjPE/U3jhCu07xhI/AAAAAAAAEq8/3S8lASZEKLM/s1600/SAM_1682-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--dwNCCMOjPE/U3jhCu07xhI/AAAAAAAAEq8/3S8lASZEKLM/s1600/SAM_1682-1.jpg" height="636" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And of course, you need to add in your seams allowance. Standard SA for Japanese pattern is usually 1cm if not specify. For hem allowance, usually they will indicate on the cutting layout plan on the book.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Rwn37TwyWx0/U3jhqJGFqfI/AAAAAAAAErE/BTFwl5uotcE/s1600/SAM_1683-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Rwn37TwyWx0/U3jhqJGFqfI/AAAAAAAAErE/BTFwl5uotcE/s1600/SAM_1683-1.jpg" height="425" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Like all Japanese sewing booking, they have a page on Essential tools and handy gadgets. Helpful for those who are new to sewing. They explain clearly on the use and functions of the tools.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7kZlP8BMsEU/U3jj5WjijdI/AAAAAAAAErQ/rM-5RtcZP3E/s1600/SAM_1666-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7kZlP8BMsEU/U3jj5WjijdI/AAAAAAAAErQ/rM-5RtcZP3E/s1600/SAM_1666-1.jpg" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
So, did I make anything from this book? Of course! I love this shawl collar on this long dress but I didn't want a long dress so guess what, I cut it shorter and made myself a blouse instead. I'll share more on this in my next post since this is getting too long.<br />

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-oiArT4fdG0M/U2eC8DoWPrI/AAAAAAAAEoE/GmmRWDGhDyY/s1600/SAM_1633-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-oiArT4fdG0M/U2eC8DoWPrI/AAAAAAAAEoE/GmmRWDGhDyY/s1600/SAM_1633-1.jpg" height="400" width="221" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I fell in love with this galaxy print cotton from Fabric.com. It reminded me of a dress I saw from this Japanese magazine Female Autumn 2013 issue.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rKaZe4o7JZg/U2eFdHF6iJI/AAAAAAAAEoY/CjWQUECZL0M/s1600/femaleautumn13.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rKaZe4o7JZg/U2eFdHF6iJI/AAAAAAAAEoY/CjWQUECZL0M/s1600/femaleautumn13.jpg" height="400" width="216" /></a></div>
<br />
I was contemplating if I should sew up the exact version but I think the loose fitting dress is going to make me look preggy. <br />
<br />
So I decided to sew up this dress from the cover of this Japanese book. It's Simple Chic by Machiko Kayaki.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ude5VW7VpeE/U2eFwWiL_MI/AAAAAAAAEog/IW2XOCDry-U/s1600/SAM_1647-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ude5VW7VpeE/U2eFwWiL_MI/AAAAAAAAEog/IW2XOCDry-U/s1600/SAM_1647-1.jpg" height="400" width="301" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I think the dress is quit unique since it has 2 diagonal darts from the side waist up. You can just catch a glimpse of the diagonal dart from the photo below.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AqJWePpr-70/U2eG7gf5ufI/AAAAAAAAEow/DwIoV9zL80w/s1600/SAM_1642-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AqJWePpr-70/U2eG7gf5ufI/AAAAAAAAEow/DwIoV9zL80w/s1600/SAM_1642-1.jpg" height="400" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
The lines on the dress is quite simple. A line with 2 darts so it will not clash with the busy print. The blue is so rich and it is a good weight to sew, not flimsy at all. I would recommend this if anyone is interested in galaxy print.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dA9C9jNP4x0/U2eH5JzZqmI/AAAAAAAAEo8/1HiidJNOaWs/s1600/SAM_1636-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dA9C9jNP4x0/U2eH5JzZqmI/AAAAAAAAEo8/1HiidJNOaWs/s1600/SAM_1636-1.jpg" height="400" width="238" /></a></div>
<br />
The above is the photo of the back view of the dress. The print seems to make the seams so invisible right? You can hardly see the invisible zipper at the centre back! I am so tickled!<br />
<br />
The original pattern neckline is too high for my liking so I brought it down by 1". Maybe my neck is too thick. lol I line the dress with Japanese nylon lining fabric that I got from Spotlight. It is slightly expensive at $13 per metre but I think it is worth it because it is anti-static and feel so cool against my skin.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LZX70XeaTI0/U2eIUGl_5TI/AAAAAAAAEpE/HWKDCv-Sf8U/s1600/SAM_1639-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LZX70XeaTI0/U2eIUGl_5TI/AAAAAAAAEpE/HWKDCv-Sf8U/s1600/SAM_1639-1.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Here's how it looks on my dress form. I can actually zip up the dress! The original pattern dress length is really LOOONGGG. I took off almost 3" and it is just below my knee. I think might need to take off more. I'm 1.60m. Not sure if its because Japanese ladies like their skirt long or I'm too short.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mpgzLy6YQN4/U2eIvsq2BxI/AAAAAAAAEpM/FnL77lqvzdc/s1600/SAM_1653-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mpgzLy6YQN4/U2eIvsq2BxI/AAAAAAAAEpM/FnL77lqvzdc/s1600/SAM_1653-1.jpg" height="400" width="232" /></a></div>
<br />
Will be wearing this for the upcoming Mother's Day church service so no photo of me wearing it here. I might post a few celebrating photo later though.<br />
<br />
My birthday is in May and I've a birthday surprise for my readers! Look out for it in my next post!<br />

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--YQRuy7zoNA/U2d-0ONGMBI/AAAAAAAAEng/EHNypPkZOFA/s1600/SAM_1657-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--YQRuy7zoNA/U2d-0ONGMBI/AAAAAAAAEng/EHNypPkZOFA/s1600/SAM_1657-1.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
I've been so late in sewing up the <a href="http://boutique.deer-and-doe.fr/29-tops-plantain-t-shirt.html" target="_blank">Plantain</a> from Deer and Doe.<br />
<br />
It is a free pattern from Deer and Doe, an independent pattern maker from France. The description given is a T-shirt fitted at shoulders and flare at hips.<br />
<br />
I've sewn up 2 versions, not counting the muslin, making short, long and 3/4 sleeves.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4lVzoMk-pXc/U2d_yN3XwqI/AAAAAAAAEno/Y-zvNfyGdac/s1600/SAM_1660-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4lVzoMk-pXc/U2d_yN3XwqI/AAAAAAAAEno/Y-zvNfyGdac/s1600/SAM_1660-1.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Here are both my short sleeve and 3/4 sleeve versions. The floral ones are made from Heather Ross's Briar Rose line "Calico in Pink". I only got 1 yard so I was quite apprehensive sewing with it. But the quality is so good and stable that I've no issue sewing it up.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-s4noMyI4xkg/U2eBL87ETzI/AAAAAAAAEn4/e81g4bnGGDM/s1600/SAM_1608-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-s4noMyI4xkg/U2eBL87ETzI/AAAAAAAAEn4/e81g4bnGGDM/s1600/SAM_1608-1.jpg" height="347" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
During my muslin stage, I realised that the size 36 is slightly tight at my bust. I was too lazy to cut out a bigger size since I've already printed out so I just eye ball and trace a bigger Seam Allowance when I sew the other 2. The hip is just nice so I tapper down to size 36 at the hip. I also added pockets for my top.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qBUQRM92KbI/U2eAuH4ZwTI/AAAAAAAAEnw/UeU9-eXcmdc/s1600/SAM_1607-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qBUQRM92KbI/U2eAuH4ZwTI/AAAAAAAAEnw/UeU9-eXcmdc/s1600/SAM_1607-1.jpg" height="370" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
For the grey knit version, I used a knit that I got from Spotlight. It was thinner but still workable. I use the Briar Rose for my pocket piece.<br />
<br />
<br />
Next I think I can trace it longer to make it into a dress!<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-z8J_BBg-dYI/U0a0jBbfGcI/AAAAAAAAEmA/Vi74D4vjevU/s1600/SAM_1571-title.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-z8J_BBg-dYI/U0a0jBbfGcI/AAAAAAAAEmA/Vi74D4vjevU/s1600/SAM_1571-title.jpg" height="400" width="260" /></a></div>
<br />
Recently my girl had a piano recital at the Esplanade Library. She was super excited and asked me to make her a dress.<br />
<br />
The pattern is from this Japanese sewing book called "Recital dress for Girls".<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-aaA6W8RoFwo/U0a3CwyTQnI/AAAAAAAAEmM/RGWvZcu0SEQ/s1600/SAM_1563-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-aaA6W8RoFwo/U0a3CwyTQnI/AAAAAAAAEmM/RGWvZcu0SEQ/s1600/SAM_1563-1.jpg" height="400" width="328" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3Y2STHgc3QE/U0a3NAmwHyI/AAAAAAAAEmU/jLV1YyvhXS8/s1600/SAM_1564-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3Y2STHgc3QE/U0a3NAmwHyI/AAAAAAAAEmU/jLV1YyvhXS8/s1600/SAM_1564-1.jpg" height="286" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
She wanted an exact same dress in dark navy blue. So I bought a dark blue stretch gabardine and a lining from Spotlight. Can't remember what's the lining called but it was tagged as Japanese lining which is quite expensive but the drape was excellent and felt so smooth and cool against my skin.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CAVXUZ3W8X8/U0a4kgn7B6I/AAAAAAAAEmc/uyPclrFh2cY/s1600/SAM_1570-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CAVXUZ3W8X8/U0a4kgn7B6I/AAAAAAAAEmc/uyPclrFh2cY/s1600/SAM_1570-1.jpg" height="400" width="333" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's my take of the dress. I followed quite closely to the instruction and cutting layout which is very useful. I adjusted the strap by 4" because it was quite long. I love the wide swingy skirt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dFT_DImjl3E/U0a5L8yKBvI/AAAAAAAAEmk/RuGbCgTyPhM/s1600/SAM_1581-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dFT_DImjl3E/U0a5L8yKBvI/AAAAAAAAEmk/RuGbCgTyPhM/s1600/SAM_1581-1.jpg" height="400" width="295" /></a></div>
<br />
It was hard to photograph the dark colour dress so I have over exposed the photo to show the dress here. The previous photo is more of the true colour. The dress fits here very well and even my family didn't realised that I made the dress.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YyTMff3EmZc/U0a6IY3ZjMI/AAAAAAAAEms/z9DL2rKZkPg/s1600/SAM_1573-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YyTMff3EmZc/U0a6IY3ZjMI/AAAAAAAAEms/z9DL2rKZkPg/s1600/SAM_1573-1.jpg" height="400" width="267" /></a></div>
<br />
One of my favourite part of the dress is the big ribbon bow at the back. The construction of the bow is very special. It is constructed with 5 pieces - 2 bow pieces, 2 ribbon pieces and 1 bow loop. The bow is then threaded through the self-made belt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qmpUm5tEqZY/U0a6j-voNAI/AAAAAAAAEm0/KRr9ScXjv3c/s1600/SAM_1560-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qmpUm5tEqZY/U0a6j-voNAI/AAAAAAAAEm0/KRr9ScXjv3c/s1600/SAM_1560-1.jpg" height="278" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The big bow really enhanced the dress. I think it is especially important to have a big bow behind the dress as that's what people will see when you are playing on the piano. But because the bow is quite big and heavy, it drag on the belt and make it sag a bit.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lvbL-x4AB8E/U0a76ropt2I/AAAAAAAAEnM/lntj78BvZJw/s1600/SAM_1578-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lvbL-x4AB8E/U0a76ropt2I/AAAAAAAAEnM/lntj78BvZJw/s1600/SAM_1578-1.jpg" height="400" width="301" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And because the dress is quite heavy with the lining, I sew on 2 ribbons just below the arm hole side seams to reduce the stress on the strap when I hang the dress.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WAESiFJY770/U0a7X1MySBI/AAAAAAAAEnE/ysOW9wfGaxM/s1600/SAM_1558-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WAESiFJY770/U0a7X1MySBI/AAAAAAAAEnE/ysOW9wfGaxM/s1600/SAM_1558-1.jpg" height="400" width="246" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
It was a good experience and I really enjoyed the learning journey of sewing a formal dress. If you are interested to sew one, you can find the book at Kinokuniya under the Japanese book section.<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-24ZG8i99V5A/Uy7wCdeDwdI/AAAAAAAAEjI/purfkn2LmXM/s1600/SAM_1534-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-24ZG8i99V5A/Uy7wCdeDwdI/AAAAAAAAEjI/purfkn2LmXM/s1600/SAM_1534-1.jpg" height="282" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This is one of my favourite dress that I've made for my girl. One of the reasons is of course the use of my favourite Out to Sea fabric by Sarah Jane. <br />
<br />
I used a pattern from this Japanese Book.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9NOkTb_yR8Q/Uy7w6PKVqSI/AAAAAAAAEjQ/qMeRQMPQpT4/s1600/SAM_1371.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9NOkTb_yR8Q/Uy7w6PKVqSI/AAAAAAAAEjQ/qMeRQMPQpT4/s1600/SAM_1371.JPG" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kZUy8WUtrjI/Uy7xEJso8RI/AAAAAAAAEjY/NCD2_n1usac/s1600/SAM_1370.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kZUy8WUtrjI/Uy7xEJso8RI/AAAAAAAAEjY/NCD2_n1usac/s1600/SAM_1370.JPG" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The pattern is without lining but I added lining because the fabric is a bit sheer. And the lining really make the dress full and fluffy because of the gathers.<br />
<br />
<br />
I fussy cut the front yoke with the sailboat on the left shoulder and make sure the sailboats are on the hem of the skirt. I love the sailboat on the yoke and the seawater makes it looks really special.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-89lnuUFSRPY/Uy7xmQtahFI/AAAAAAAAEjg/ipGP_EgHSno/s1600/20140320_193724-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-89lnuUFSRPY/Uy7xmQtahFI/AAAAAAAAEjg/ipGP_EgHSno/s1600/20140320_193724-1.jpg" height="640" width="473" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's the back view of the dress. I also fussy cut the cloud to be on the back yoke portion but it is not so clear in the photo.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uC99XmhlrQ8/Uy7yuPvrAeI/AAAAAAAAEj4/4uDoQBfT664/s1600/20140320_193834-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uC99XmhlrQ8/Uy7yuPvrAeI/AAAAAAAAEj4/4uDoQBfT664/s1600/20140320_193834-1.jpg" height="640" width="488" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
The ruffle is also very pretty and add just the right girly factor to the dress.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-h75coF2Nyb8/Uy7yfGzAsTI/AAAAAAAAEjw/XE8pyWeqzF4/s1600/20140320_193913-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-h75coF2Nyb8/Uy7yfGzAsTI/AAAAAAAAEjw/XE8pyWeqzF4/s1600/20140320_193913-1.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
Alas, I've only bought 1.5 yard and I was greedy to try to squeeze a dress and a skirt so the back and front is not match nicely : (<br />
<br />
But it is still a cute dress and I'm so happy the way it turns out. I'm so happy that I will photo bomb my girl in her dress..hehehe... I'm a proud mama!<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AOAXAeN9GAE/Uy7t84k42MI/AAAAAAAAEig/Ri7TTb7DGcs/s1600/SAM_1511-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AOAXAeN9GAE/Uy7t84k42MI/AAAAAAAAEig/Ri7TTb7DGcs/s1600/SAM_1511-1.jpg" height="400" width="352" /></a></div>
<br />
This is another top that I've sewn using the tried and tested Sorbetto pattern from Colette Patterns. <br />
<br />
This time, I've added a peter pan collar and sleeves. I trace the neckline and self drafted the collar which is only on the front and bound the seams with black cotton bias tape. I've interfaced the collar to make it stays the shape.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-W4OuoTN_mTY/Uy7uXTguphI/AAAAAAAAEio/Hj_FJNnPpRc/s1600/SAM_1512-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-W4OuoTN_mTY/Uy7uXTguphI/AAAAAAAAEio/Hj_FJNnPpRc/s1600/SAM_1512-1.jpg" height="280" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The birdcage chiffon is from Spotlight which is surprisingly not difficult to sew. I was attracted by the cute print and the subtle blue and turquoise collar of the birds. The collar compliment the black on the birdcage nicely.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fa0Rzb4tFR0/Uy7u2f-Ga-I/AAAAAAAAEiw/JEHSl5wsowY/s1600/20140320_193333-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fa0Rzb4tFR0/Uy7u2f-Ga-I/AAAAAAAAEiw/JEHSl5wsowY/s1600/20140320_193333-1.jpg" height="400" width="303" /></a></div>
<br />
For the sleeve, I've use the same sleeve piece from my earlier yellow blouse which fits the sorbetto really well. I bind the sleeve hem with the same black bias tape.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jYyh0PXcRaw/Uy7vIT0haUI/AAAAAAAAEi4/OLjWipY0HaE/s1600/20140320_193146-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jYyh0PXcRaw/Uy7vIT0haUI/AAAAAAAAEi4/OLjWipY0HaE/s1600/20140320_193146-1.jpg" height="400" width="315" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's the front view on me. I wore it to work and many thought it was store bought. I'm very happy! Next time I think I will make the neckline smaller and change it to a dress?<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The past week has been a fruitful sewing journey for me. Made 2 blouses and 1 skirt for myself, 2 skirts and a dress for my girls. That explain why I've been missing for some time. Hard to take photo after the late night sewing and rushing to work in the day time.<br />
<br />
Here's the first top I've sewn. It's a pattern from Lady Boutique No. 485 for a loose blouse with notch and bias bound neckline.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SZKU8bYYAUs/Uy7rWM7ZWXI/AAAAAAAAEh4/a2VMV-d7Bps/s1600/SAM_1507-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SZKU8bYYAUs/Uy7rWM7ZWXI/AAAAAAAAEh4/a2VMV-d7Bps/s1600/SAM_1507-1.jpg" height="400" width="281" /></a></div>
<span id="goog_133497119"></span><span id="goog_133497120"></span><br />
I bought this soft butter yellow cotton from Spotlight. They are very airy and just the right drape for this type of blouse. I omit the center seams and notch and cut my front on the fold. The neckline is wide enough to slip through without the notch.<br />
<br />
I bind the neckline and sleeve hem with these pretty floral bias tapes that I got from Daiso. The orange and yellow flower really makes the blouse so springy and pretty.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-n2TJeu3cAE8/Uy7rwx2NtmI/AAAAAAAAEiA/IDu5DIuK6Gw/s1600/SAM_1502-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-n2TJeu3cAE8/Uy7rwx2NtmI/AAAAAAAAEiA/IDu5DIuK6Gw/s1600/SAM_1502-1.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SsR-fXjJFwI/Uy7sOJ7anAI/AAAAAAAAEiI/joCW6tJG1O0/s1600/SAM_1503-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SsR-fXjJFwI/Uy7sOJ7anAI/AAAAAAAAEiI/joCW6tJG1O0/s1600/SAM_1503-1.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
You can wear the blouse as it is, tuck out or tuck in. Or you can wear with a belt. I sew the remaining bias tape onto a grosgrain ribbon and use it as a belt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FcnQmTjh7c4/Uy7sRdQg0UI/AAAAAAAAEiQ/VUZr9D8GP7w/s1600/SAM_1499-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FcnQmTjh7c4/Uy7sRdQg0UI/AAAAAAAAEiQ/VUZr9D8GP7w/s1600/SAM_1499-1.jpg" height="277" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ni70YeKXkVs/Uy7tIeOdBbI/AAAAAAAAEiY/jimzXwFi8Vo/s1600/20140319_194709-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ni70YeKXkVs/Uy7tIeOdBbI/AAAAAAAAEiY/jimzXwFi8Vo/s1600/20140319_194709-1.jpg" height="400" width="380" /></a></div>
<br />
I love the bias tapes and there are few more in blue, pink and yellow that I bought so can't wait to use them on my project.<br />

<br />
This post concludes the last series of my 1 yard Nico Nico Land fabric sewing.<br />
<br />
The messenger bag is a request from my 9 year old. She wants a cross body bag with a big flap and a zipper. She also requested for a side water bottle holder if possible. But alas, since I'm working with the remnant of my fabric, I had to go for a basic bag.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4m9-QlC_8rc/UxsbjxSmyTI/AAAAAAAAEgY/tUMLDbaV1oA/s1600/SAM_1345-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4m9-QlC_8rc/UxsbjxSmyTI/AAAAAAAAEgY/tUMLDbaV1oA/s1600/SAM_1345-1.jpg" height="298" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">front view with flap</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
The bag a BIG flap in front with velcro closures. I didn't use any pattern since I am using left over fabric and still wanted to match the print for the front flap to the side of the bag and the front of the bag. But I refer heavily to Lier's post on <a href="http://www.ikatbag.com/2013/02/make-bag-chapter-9-gusseted-tote.html" target="_blank">gusseted tote </a>tutorial.<br />
<br />
<br />
But due to the limitation of my fabric and the need to align the print, I cut my flap, top and back in one continuous piece and then sew a line between the back and top portion to create an artificial line to demarcate the back portion. See below.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yQXInm9Dv7o/UxscVOSZ3LI/AAAAAAAAEgg/MZlp_FMUGKc/s1600/SAM_1346-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yQXInm9Dv7o/UxscVOSZ3LI/AAAAAAAAEgg/MZlp_FMUGKc/s1600/SAM_1346-1.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">back view</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
As I use a directional print for my side gusset, I sew 2 pieces of the gusset pieces right side facing so that the seam lines are under the bottom of the bag and out of sight.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xnbTFdHZL9A/UxsdfSCkbNI/AAAAAAAAEgo/ujG4Q9kyQg8/s1600/SAM_1347-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xnbTFdHZL9A/UxsdfSCkbNI/AAAAAAAAEgo/ujG4Q9kyQg8/s1600/SAM_1347-1.jpg" height="400" width="266" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">side of bag</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
With careful placement, both sides of the bag has the same pink border print at the bottom which align nicely with the front flap print! I did try to make sure that side and front are same so I was extremely careful when sewing the velcro on the front.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lj9-vtG3ko8/UxseREJmmcI/AAAAAAAAEg4/UgrGDG_jMqM/s1600/SAM_1341.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lj9-vtG3ko8/UxseREJmmcI/AAAAAAAAEg4/UgrGDG_jMqM/s1600/SAM_1341.JPG" height="266" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">front view without flap</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The bag is really big and roomy. It measures 14" wide and 11" tall. I'm recording down the measurement below so that I can keep for future reference.<br />
<br />
<br />
Flap+Top+Back = Height [ 26" + 0.5" SA + 0.5" SA ] X Width [14" + 0.5" SA + 0.5" SA]<br />
2 Side Gusset Panels = Length [18" + 0.5" SA + 0.5" SA] X Width [4" + 0.5" SA + 0.5" SA]<br />
Front = Height [11" + 0.5" SA + 0.5" SA] X Width [14" + 0.5" SA + 0.5" SA]<br />
<br />
<br />
Here's the inside view with the pocket. I actually pieced the pocket pieces together since I've not enough. The top pink portion is actually from the bottom print but it works like bias tape here to cover the raw edge!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-C8H-i2may2I/UxsgW0rhrmI/AAAAAAAAEhE/92QzexOIHW0/s1600/SAM_1343-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-C8H-i2may2I/UxsgW0rhrmI/AAAAAAAAEhE/92QzexOIHW0/s1600/SAM_1343-1.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
After I've sewn up the bag, I sew the straps. I can't find the shade of pink in the right width for the bag. Since it is so big, the strap should be at least 1.5". Finally at the Textile centre, I got this 1.5" beige cotton webbing that is not too stiff and sew on a 0.75" pink nylon webbing in the middle to match the overall pink theme.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6FGaYaFCyao/UxshVPCpicI/AAAAAAAAEhM/ZhKfzy229aM/s1600/SAM_1340-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6FGaYaFCyao/UxshVPCpicI/AAAAAAAAEhM/ZhKfzy229aM/s1600/SAM_1340-1.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also bought some black sliders and buckles from the same shop. I can't find a pink or white ones so black will have to do. Lier's blog has a good tutorial on how to sew the sliders and straps which is very helpful.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ghuyJmrWlCk/UxshZU-hDdI/AAAAAAAAEhU/nqp4R1L3aTU/s1600/SAM_1352-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ghuyJmrWlCk/UxshZU-hDdI/AAAAAAAAEhU/nqp4R1L3aTU/s1600/SAM_1352-1.jpg" height="640" width="424" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Here's the bag in action. She loves the big bag. It's a good thing that I didn't add the side pocket. It will be too bulky and heavy. She just flop the flap over and didn't even care if it match the sides. So much for my careful sewing! You just have to take my words that they really match at the side. lol<br />
<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kHXGweNS77s/UxdXVBP50mI/AAAAAAAAEdE/PQsWmz456sA/s1600/PicMonkey+Collage-4in1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kHXGweNS77s/UxdXVBP50mI/AAAAAAAAEdE/PQsWmz456sA/s1600/PicMonkey+Collage-4in1.jpg" height="160" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Without further ado, this is a sling bag for my 4 year old. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rzBjtWon24M/Uxdfe1cLjcI/AAAAAAAAEfA/6WI-S1ofUTk/s1600/SAM_1318-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rzBjtWon24M/Uxdfe1cLjcI/AAAAAAAAEfA/6WI-S1ofUTk/s1600/SAM_1318-1.jpg" height="640" width="448" /></a></div>
<br />
The bag is cut using the bottom of the border print for Nico Nico Land. Pattern is also from the same magazine Cucito 2012 Winter/Early Spring issue. Don't you just love this magazine. It is packed with lots of Back to School projects and lots of bags/pouches/apron ideas. The sling bag is no. 52 and no. 55 in the picture below.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RXgVvrG9S_I/Uxdf9pAO6sI/AAAAAAAAEfI/9PllFlbMh9Y/s1600/SAM_1362-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RXgVvrG9S_I/Uxdf9pAO6sI/AAAAAAAAEfI/9PllFlbMh9Y/s1600/SAM_1362-1.jpg" height="640" width="432" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The original bag uses a quilted cotton as the outer fabric. I did the reverse. My lining is the pre-quilted cotton so it work out well. The quilted cotton really gives the bag some structure but not too stiff. I used it for the <a href="http://www.mommysewpretty.blogspot.sg/2014/03/bags-pouches-part-1.html" target="_blank">Shoe bag</a> earlier.<br />
<br />
Instruction is also given using diagrams but without photographs. I think it is still quite clear. Here you can see the top of the bag is closed with velcro. I cut the fabric so that the top is framed by a border of flowers.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lqejKVMygh0/Uxdg2iRDp3I/AAAAAAAAEfU/IMne61jHquA/s1600/SAM_1322-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lqejKVMygh0/Uxdg2iRDp3I/AAAAAAAAEfU/IMne61jHquA/s1600/SAM_1322-1.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Inside of the bag. See the quilted cotton? Give it a nice shape and padding. It looks like a bucket if you open up wide.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YFw70K1VHps/UxdhN4se9NI/AAAAAAAAEfk/fAr7KwCUdoA/s1600/SAM_1325-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YFw70K1VHps/UxdhN4se9NI/AAAAAAAAEfk/fAr7KwCUdoA/s1600/SAM_1325-1.jpg" height="400" width="307" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Here's the side view. See the strap. Guess where I got them? haha... You are right if you say Daiso. Both the D Ring, slider (at the bottom) and the strap are from Daiso. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-MLJk25sTjxc/UxdhM3_7WwI/AAAAAAAAEfc/FaUyGJK7RZI/s1600/SAM_1327-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-MLJk25sTjxc/UxdhM3_7WwI/AAAAAAAAEfc/FaUyGJK7RZI/s1600/SAM_1327-1.jpg" height="400" width="308" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The slides and the D Ring. A set cost $2 so you can make 2 bags with 1 set! Real deal. Both the pink and red ones have small white polka dots on them. Super cute. I think they also got Yellow and Baby Blue [City Square Mall branch].<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MJqsAq16Us0/UxdjDgq-ntI/AAAAAAAAEgA/I912oISKX80/s1600/SAM_1367.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MJqsAq16Us0/UxdjDgq-ntI/AAAAAAAAEgA/I912oISKX80/s1600/SAM_1367.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Here's the action shot of my girl with her bag. You can see the slider on the bag, making it adjustable and she can use it when she grow taller.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7JDYaiFA8QI/Uxdhzyf4irI/AAAAAAAAEfs/F4moJ8Oax7w/s1600/SAM_1328-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7JDYaiFA8QI/Uxdhzyf4irI/AAAAAAAAEfs/F4moJ8Oax7w/s1600/SAM_1328-1.jpg" height="400" width="382" /></a></div>
<br />
Ahh...when did she grow up so fast! It was just yesterday that she was a toddler learning to walk. sob..My baby has grown up. <br />
<br />
She loves her new bag and the height and depth is just nice to fit 3 A4 size colouring books and 2 big colour pencil cases plus a water bottle. Very roomy.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OleSbDFXRFk/UxdjkvPU5II/AAAAAAAAEgI/Q2SEH5f3e9E/s1600/SAM_1329-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OleSbDFXRFk/UxdjkvPU5II/AAAAAAAAEgI/Q2SEH5f3e9E/s1600/SAM_1329-1.jpg" height="400" width="355" /></a></div>
<br />
I love it that the strap is not too stiff. It is quite soft and the soft pink colour matches the bag perfectly. A happy kid really makes my day.<br />
<br />
<br />
Next post, I will conclude with a Messenger Bag for my 9 year old. Stay tune!<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kHXGweNS77s/UxdXVBP50mI/AAAAAAAAEdE/PQsWmz456sA/s1600/PicMonkey+Collage-4in1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kHXGweNS77s/UxdXVBP50mI/AAAAAAAAEdE/PQsWmz456sA/s1600/PicMonkey+Collage-4in1.jpg" height="160" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Welcome back for part 2 of the 4-bags-with-1 yard-fabric post!<br />
<br />
I also made a Cup Bag for the same little girl in Japan. Cup Bag? What's that? I was surprised when I read the name on the magazine but it seems like in Japan, there is different bags/pouches for different items like shoe, cup, bento, lesson bag etc.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--gISt08NB9w/UxddSDwISUI/AAAAAAAAEeU/j82iaARPUvY/s1600/SAM_1361-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--gISt08NB9w/UxddSDwISUI/AAAAAAAAEeU/j82iaARPUvY/s1600/SAM_1361-1.jpg" height="400" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
Anyway, I use the pattern from the same magazine.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hnMck_hEyLk/UxdZQeVLGrI/AAAAAAAAEdY/9-kTOEr8Iok/s1600/SAM_1356-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hnMck_hEyLk/UxdZQeVLGrI/AAAAAAAAEdY/9-kTOEr8Iok/s1600/SAM_1356-1.jpg" height="400" width="348" /></a></div>
<br />
The instruction is also a photo step by step so it was really easy. Especially this one don't need a lining.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-c6Hn0Fuy2-c/Uxdc9s9BzNI/AAAAAAAAEeM/ffBad3o0jDo/s1600/SAM_1366-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-c6Hn0Fuy2-c/Uxdc9s9BzNI/AAAAAAAAEeM/ffBad3o0jDo/s1600/SAM_1366-1.jpg" height="322" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
For this bag or pouch, I use the middle portion of the Nico Nico Land fabric which has lots of cute cakes, macron print all over the baby pink background.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rI5SC5RDZdM/UxddfBeAw7I/AAAAAAAAEec/1fkIBS53ilI/s1600/SAM_1304-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rI5SC5RDZdM/UxddfBeAw7I/AAAAAAAAEec/1fkIBS53ilI/s1600/SAM_1304-1.jpg" height="302" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Did you notice my cute pink stopper and beads? I got these as a set [2 stoppers and 4 beads] from Daiso for $2! Yes, you have to believe it. Daiso does carry some of these cute item that is really affordable and add a cute factor to your project don't you think?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QTuKd6jo9kY/UxdeA7gmbzI/AAAAAAAAEek/8wmykRIN6tM/s1600/SAM_1307-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QTuKd6jo9kY/UxdeA7gmbzI/AAAAAAAAEek/8wmykRIN6tM/s1600/SAM_1307-1.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Here's how it looks open up. My Precious Moment ballerina figurine is modelling for me.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nKzKASM56r8/UxdeXGEi8SI/AAAAAAAAEes/4_o8ssdus4Q/s1600/SAM_1312-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nKzKASM56r8/UxdeXGEi8SI/AAAAAAAAEes/4_o8ssdus4Q/s1600/SAM_1312-1.jpg" height="295" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Side view.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3thHEWiWe0M/UxdeoZYE-FI/AAAAAAAAEe0/2bluKHjOInM/s1600/SAM_1317-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3thHEWiWe0M/UxdeoZYE-FI/AAAAAAAAEe0/2bluKHjOInM/s1600/SAM_1317-1.jpg" height="640" width="425" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
That complete the set for my little friend. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bSZZJNWVvCs/UxdbOHNgfvI/AAAAAAAAEd8/jA3KQHe2XHU/s1600/PicMonkey+Collage-pouch.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bSZZJNWVvCs/UxdbOHNgfvI/AAAAAAAAEd8/jA3KQHe2XHU/s1600/PicMonkey+Collage-pouch.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
So, come back again for Part 3! I know, I'm a tease : P<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-kHXGweNS77s/UxdXVBP50mI/AAAAAAAAEdA/2g8pEQdEeyY/s1600/PicMonkey+Collage-4in1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-kHXGweNS77s/UxdXVBP50mI/AAAAAAAAEdA/2g8pEQdEeyY/s1600/PicMonkey+Collage-4in1.jpg" height="160" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
In my last trip to Japan, I bought some Japanese fabric. The bags above are all made from 1 yard of Nico Nico Land fabric designed by Koko Seki under Lecien.<br />
<br />
I'm very pleased with myself to squeezed out 4 items with just 1 yard! The print is border printed on both sides of the panel so if you lay your pattern differently, you will get different design and look!<br />
<br />
First up, is a Shoe Bag that I make for my best friend's girl in Japan. This is the type of bag that the elementary kids use to keep their shoes and bring to shoe. I use the bottom part of the print so that the pink flower will become the base and the cartoon are at the top.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BizyNdyIHp8/UxdY9xVK4WI/AAAAAAAAEdM/V1t2zCKR46Y/s1600/SAM_1295-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BizyNdyIHp8/UxdY9xVK4WI/AAAAAAAAEdM/V1t2zCKR46Y/s1600/SAM_1295-1.jpg" height="640" width="425" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Pattern is from this book.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hnMck_hEyLk/UxdZQeVLGrI/AAAAAAAAEdU/iYFbOqrQqUQ/s1600/SAM_1356-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hnMck_hEyLk/UxdZQeVLGrI/AAAAAAAAEdU/iYFbOqrQqUQ/s1600/SAM_1356-1.jpg" height="400" width="348" /></a></div>
<br />
There is a photo step by step to guide you on sewing such bag.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bLuxf8FRIDs/UxdZTdlobpI/AAAAAAAAEdc/r7swqq8Iv9I/s1600/SAM_1360-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bLuxf8FRIDs/UxdZTdlobpI/AAAAAAAAEdc/r7swqq8Iv9I/s1600/SAM_1360-1.jpg" height="400" width="343" /></a></div>
<br />
Instead of the fabric loop that the instruction called for, I use this <strike>loop(?) (not sure what you call this item)</strike> D Ring.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-G54dbSzOgAc/UxdZts-r4uI/AAAAAAAAEdk/gy36dO4egjc/s1600/SAM_1296-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-G54dbSzOgAc/UxdZts-r4uI/AAAAAAAAEdk/gy36dO4egjc/s1600/SAM_1296-1.jpg" height="277" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
So you string one end of the strap through the <strike>loop </strike>D Ring and pull through. The lining for the bag is a quilted cotton that I got from Spotlight. This one is really useful and save me the time to quilt. I didn't interface the fabric because the thick fabric plus the quilted lining help to hold the bag nicely.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MMlt9_1KpHQ/UxdZ66G7gCI/AAAAAAAAEds/Jc6Cz9hHwjU/s1600/SAM_1299-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MMlt9_1KpHQ/UxdZ66G7gCI/AAAAAAAAEds/Jc6Cz9hHwjU/s1600/SAM_1299-1.jpg" height="640" width="425" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The <strike>loop </strike>D Ring and the strap is a set that I got for $2 from Daiso. It comes in bright pink and yellow. I think the colour fits the bag nicely.<br />
<br />
<br />
I'll share the next pouch in my next post.<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zPm-TngCCRg/UxdTz6dd6MI/AAAAAAAAEcc/lRzOqxqIe1Y/s1600/PicMonkey+Collage-title.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zPm-TngCCRg/UxdTz6dd6MI/AAAAAAAAEcc/lRzOqxqIe1Y/s1600/PicMonkey+Collage-title.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I've been trying out different types of cushion covers lately..<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Velcro closure </b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-E8n0FZgzICw/UxdT9jMDgqI/AAAAAAAAEck/_AY0vloc1S4/s1600/PicMonkey+Collage-patchwk.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-E8n0FZgzICw/UxdT9jMDgqI/AAAAAAAAEck/_AY0vloc1S4/s1600/PicMonkey+Collage-patchwk.jpg" height="320" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Super secure and real nice fit. The pillow form measure 20"X20" which I got for $4.90 from Ikea. The pillow form is quite loosely filled so when I cut the fabric, I use 20" square so that it will be more form fitting. I love how this one looks so cheery and bright.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Invisible Zipper closure</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-B6ALeBuON94/UxdUuTDCMoI/AAAAAAAAEcs/mzsHvpVlHPE/s1600/PicMonkey+Collage-red+riding+hood.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-B6ALeBuON94/UxdUuTDCMoI/AAAAAAAAEcs/mzsHvpVlHPE/s1600/PicMonkey+Collage-red+riding+hood.jpg" height="320" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div>
The zipper closure is applied to the bottom of the cushion cover before I sew up the 3 sides. For the front, I join the 2 fabric together and sew a piece of red satin ribbon over the seam line for added interest. This one is so sweet.<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Envelope closure</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MBowIB7SMwU/UxdVLry0-7I/AAAAAAAAEc0/xS5UrPk3aXQ/s1600/PicMonkey+Collage-14.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MBowIB7SMwU/UxdVLry0-7I/AAAAAAAAEc0/xS5UrPk3aXQ/s1600/PicMonkey+Collage-14.jpg" height="320" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
<br />
This is a 14" pillow form from Ikea. It's a steal at $1.90 each. The pillow form is more tightly packed, so for this one, I cut the fabric with 1/4" seam allowance. Also, with envelope closure, if you sew the cover too tightly, the back will not lay flat.</div>
<div>
<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
Sewing cushion covers are so easy and quick. I sew up the 3 covers in just a night of sewing, including cutting. I think I prefer the zipper closure because it is really neat and so easy to change the pillow. Which do you prefer?</div>
<div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lRXTtAlfWE4/UvzfF9Tt3II/AAAAAAAAEbQ/83lXCBDyaMA/s1600/SAM_1223-title.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lRXTtAlfWE4/UvzfF9Tt3II/AAAAAAAAEbQ/83lXCBDyaMA/s1600/SAM_1223-title.jpg" height="290" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I love love love this kids apron or bib. This is a bigger size for kids who are learning to eat by themselves. The pattern is from Cucito Spring 2013 issue.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xz5MfUCvH94/Uvzfd64KToI/AAAAAAAAEbY/jQJlj_Zqm94/s1600/SAM_1231-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xz5MfUCvH94/Uvzfd64KToI/AAAAAAAAEbY/jQJlj_Zqm94/s1600/SAM_1231-1.jpg" height="345" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The pattern piece is included in this issue and since it is only 1 size, tracing was a breeze. Detailed instruction is given on how to sew. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qki1Mk34tb4/UvzfsjWlbOI/AAAAAAAAEbg/p8qpPc6v-kM/s1600/SAM_1232-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qki1Mk34tb4/UvzfsjWlbOI/AAAAAAAAEbg/p8qpPc6v-kM/s1600/SAM_1232-1.jpg" height="271" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The back close with velcro and all the edges are bind with bias tapes. I use the 1/2" satin bias tape that I bought from Textile centre even though this call for a double fold bias tapes. So it will work, just be very slow and careful when you sew.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mgaGkuPODxA/UvzgGFwggOI/AAAAAAAAEbs/8zKKljIGpL8/s1600/SAM_1224-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mgaGkuPODxA/UvzgGFwggOI/AAAAAAAAEbs/8zKKljIGpL8/s1600/SAM_1224-1.jpg" height="288" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I cut the print upside down : (<br />but baby will get to see the print right side up when he wear right?</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I made the blue bib for my colleague boy. Hope the boy will love the print.<br />
<br />
Since I've already cut out the template, must well mass production right?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-M9q804RmvH8/UvzhBvXgNyI/AAAAAAAAEb0/t3Y_AALgrgk/s1600/SAM_1225-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-M9q804RmvH8/UvzhBvXgNyI/AAAAAAAAEb0/t3Y_AALgrgk/s1600/SAM_1225-1.jpg" height="280" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
So I made 2 more for my brother-in-law's twins. The print is so cute and cheery don't you think? I have used the same fabric but cut them differently so that they are not exactly identical.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dqjnYBXdED0/UvzhZrTHBCI/AAAAAAAAEb8/AyDL2NwwKyQ/s1600/SAM_1226-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dqjnYBXdED0/UvzhZrTHBCI/AAAAAAAAEb8/AyDL2NwwKyQ/s1600/SAM_1226-1.jpg" height="268" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The elephant cotton is from a shop in Chinatown and was told that this was from Japan so the price was higher but it was thick and holds the shape well. I back the bib with a waterproof fabric that I got from Daiso and bind with Red satin bias tape.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-F69N1vPjQ9E/Uvzh9z1NiXI/AAAAAAAAEcE/Jr_mwsuE0FI/s1600/SAM_1228-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-F69N1vPjQ9E/Uvzh9z1NiXI/AAAAAAAAEcE/Jr_mwsuE0FI/s1600/SAM_1228-1.jpg" height="282" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
For the other one, I bind with yellow satin bias tape. With a different cutting layout, the bib looks very different right?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-waEL3vtSCU4/UvziU7_eSSI/AAAAAAAAEcM/6Dgm9UHJLtc/s1600/SAM_1229-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-waEL3vtSCU4/UvziU7_eSSI/AAAAAAAAEcM/6Dgm9UHJLtc/s1600/SAM_1229-1.jpg" height="297" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I hope the kids love their new bibs. My 4 year old says 'Wah! So pretty." and she even tried them on. It fits, can you believe it? So, bib will last till 4 year old if they so desired! hahaha...<br />
<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8ORdB-H1ZZ4/UvzUaE2Hw6I/AAAAAAAAEaU/iJGkpn3vYBE/s1600/2014-01-26-15-52-25_photo-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8ORdB-H1ZZ4/UvzUaE2Hw6I/AAAAAAAAEaU/iJGkpn3vYBE/s1600/2014-01-26-15-52-25_photo-1.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm happy that I was able to keep the tradition of home-made PJ for them every Lunar new year. This time, I decided to make a knit PJ in dress which is more comfortable for our hot weather. I've adapted the pattern from Ottobre 4/2013's Circus Horse dress using size 110 for my 4 year old. Instead of a gathered skirt, I just lengthen the bodice and flare out to make a slight A line dress with raglan sleeve.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lUIuf_iBPrQ/UvzZduzJmmI/AAAAAAAAEao/dIOVTsN3-TU/s1600/2014-01-26-15-52-16_photo-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lUIuf_iBPrQ/UvzZduzJmmI/AAAAAAAAEao/dIOVTsN3-TU/s1600/2014-01-26-15-52-16_photo-1.jpg" height="400" width="311" /></a></div>
<br />
The star print blue sweatshirt knit is from Spotlight and the white knit (not sure of the content but it is thicker) is from Fabric.com. I love raglan sleeves as there is no need for setting of sleeves. Ottobre is great as they give the measurement for the neckband so it was really helpful.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-G0Ms7gGIZsU/UvzZ3LpObEI/AAAAAAAAEaw/uNYCvmLyf08/s1600/SAM_1153-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-G0Ms7gGIZsU/UvzZ3LpObEI/AAAAAAAAEaw/uNYCvmLyf08/s1600/SAM_1153-1.jpg" height="400" width="278" /></a></div>
<br />
For my older, I use the same Ottobre issue's Ruler - striped raglan T-shirt as my base. The 134 is slightly tight for my tall 9 year old. I also lengthen the bodice to make it A line dress. Added the kangaroo pocket. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dMvQJutBvZY/UvzU0Ck9osI/AAAAAAAAEac/LJfUZsAYRFI/s1600/2014-01-26-18-31-48_photo-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dMvQJutBvZY/UvzU0Ck9osI/AAAAAAAAEac/LJfUZsAYRFI/s1600/2014-01-26-18-31-48_photo-1.jpg" height="400" width="250" /></a></div>
<br />
The knit is really thin and but she loves it. Next time, I must go 1 size up if I'm making a dress as PJ should be more loose fitting.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MQCzKKO-NIo/UvzajI6NTwI/AAAAAAAAEa8/1ZBKGOoOMH4/s1600/SAM_1149-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MQCzKKO-NIo/UvzajI6NTwI/AAAAAAAAEa8/1ZBKGOoOMH4/s1600/SAM_1149-1.jpg" height="400" width="241" /></a></div>
<br />
Like her sister's PJ, the raglan sleeve is really a breeze and I really like how it fits them so well.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8UAyYsvQW9U/UvzalzNkiMI/AAAAAAAAEbE/PgcXG2ifG7o/s1600/SAM_1151-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8UAyYsvQW9U/UvzalzNkiMI/AAAAAAAAEbE/PgcXG2ifG7o/s1600/SAM_1151-1.jpg" height="400" width="261" /></a></div>
<br />
I've bought some cute cotton print with colourful mermaids and originally had intention to make them PJ out of it. I even bought Oliver and S PJ pattern. So, maybe this year, I will make 2 PJs for the girls.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2a-3xAh4PkU/UvzP3IGd6pI/AAAAAAAAEZw/8cli2H38vc8/s1600/SAM_0153-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2a-3xAh4PkU/UvzP3IGd6pI/AAAAAAAAEZw/8cli2H38vc8/s1600/SAM_0153-1.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
Recently I've come to control the sugar intake for my kids. During the Christmas and the holiday in Japan, my kids have stuffed themselves with lots of sweets, cakes, ice creams and many many sweet treats. It was so yummy, who can blame them. But the side effect of all the sugar in their bodies meant that they were hyper hyper active and uncontrollable. So back to Singapore, we tried to regulate their sugar intake. Not too successful but we are still trying hard..<br />
<br />
<br />
So, for this Valentine's Day, instead of dumping more sugars on my kids and others, I decided to go sugar-free! Apologies to some of you who have prepared sweet treats of chocolates and cakes, I may go that direction again for next year, but for now, how about a Bow Hair Clip?<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm too lazy and decided to buy these grosgrain little ribbon bows from a shop at Textile Centre. The shop sells various size of bows and colours, all so pretty! If I divide out the cost, each bow cost about 25cents. I think this is much better than me trying to make the perfect bow and sewing the small pieces together!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-unjMgAahE50/UvzQuu0kgWI/AAAAAAAAEZ4/Y8xej9E2HBQ/s1600/SAM_1133-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-unjMgAahE50/UvzQuu0kgWI/AAAAAAAAEZ4/Y8xej9E2HBQ/s1600/SAM_1133-1.jpg" height="207" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The alligator clips are also from Textile Centre that I bought in bulk some years ago form another shop there. Using the hot glue gun, it was a breeze. I hand draw the faces on colourful card stock and cut a slit and insert the clip. So cute right? So how can I stop at 2? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made all 50 of them!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iA6SrvkO8rw/UvzRWYDkW2I/AAAAAAAAEaA/6pqobZi520s/s1600/SAM_1135-1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iA6SrvkO8rw/UvzRWYDkW2I/AAAAAAAAEaA/6pqobZi520s/s1600/SAM_1135-1.png" height="400" width="341" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These are for my girl's school which they only allow blue bows since the uniform is blue. I also made pinks but didn't take any photos. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For my youngest, I prepared these instead for her friends and teachers at the Childcare centre.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qY8kDKJ1OWU/UvzRwc-iKQI/AAAAAAAAEaI/0bFm8rWA7kU/s1600/SAM_1221-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qY8kDKJ1OWU/UvzRwc-iKQI/AAAAAAAAEaI/0bFm8rWA7kU/s1600/SAM_1221-1.jpg" height="400" width="336" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Some bouncy balls that I got from Daiso. Add the tag " You make my heart bounce!" and they are good to go. Cards and plastic holders are all from Daiso.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
They are so excited to go school tomorrow to bring the gifts to their friends. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Happy Valentine's Day, my virtual and real life friends!</div>

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vOk2cKjnjG4/UvJMwX3MFyI/AAAAAAAAEXk/22Yaaf4pYHA/s1600/2014-01-14+01.16.19-title.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vOk2cKjnjG4/UvJMwX3MFyI/AAAAAAAAEXk/22Yaaf4pYHA/s1600/2014-01-14+01.16.19-title.jpg" height="640" width="418" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
My girls love tutus. So, I decided to make them a tutu dress for the Lunar New Year. <br />
<br />
Little sister got the Pink and Green combo<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hJdLxcuJx5U/UvJNETXJTgI/AAAAAAAAEXs/xAZGOBxC7vw/s1600/SAM_1154-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hJdLxcuJx5U/UvJNETXJTgI/AAAAAAAAEXs/xAZGOBxC7vw/s1600/SAM_1154-1.jpg" height="400" width="265" /></a></div>
<br />
While Big sister has the Purple and Pink combo<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PoOKD-efJZ8/UvJNTDOSvyI/AAAAAAAAEX0/-3VsiXZnv-0/s1600/SAM_1167-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PoOKD-efJZ8/UvJNTDOSvyI/AAAAAAAAEX0/-3VsiXZnv-0/s1600/SAM_1167-1.jpg" height="400" width="295" /></a></div>
<br />
The pattern is from Violette Field Threads' Chloe. The bodice fits both my girls very well. But I did the skirt differently since it was really thick.<br />
<br />
For the bodice, I added the bias tape trim to create a curve feature and add on 3 frog buttons. The bias trim is also added to the bodice edge.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Y5nBtwFs014/UvJN3fn4zEI/AAAAAAAAEYA/SSOzG5mQzWk/s1600/SAM_1182-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Y5nBtwFs014/UvJN3fn4zEI/AAAAAAAAEYA/SSOzG5mQzWk/s1600/SAM_1182-1.jpg" height="256" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Instead of a separate waistband/ties, I just measure the desired length I want and insert them to the side seams. Just make sure that you insert them about 1/2" or 1" above the bodice hem as you will need to account for the seam allowance that will get attach to the skirt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aRM5wdfpOLk/UvJSqOJBEJI/AAAAAAAAEZA/jquESBJWFvE/s1600/SAM_1173-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aRM5wdfpOLk/UvJSqOJBEJI/AAAAAAAAEZA/jquESBJWFvE/s1600/SAM_1173-1.jpg" height="400" width="331" /></a></div>
<br />
I also do away with buttons since I really dislike sewing button holes. Invisible zipper makes everything looks so neat don't you think so?<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TpaL1VeKFXY/UvJOM_EiKnI/AAAAAAAAEYI/PhQj4n6c6F0/s1600/SAM_1172-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TpaL1VeKFXY/UvJOM_EiKnI/AAAAAAAAEYI/PhQj4n6c6F0/s1600/SAM_1172-1.jpg" height="400" width="291" /></a></div>
<br />
Have you notice something different here? The skirts are detachable! This is more practical and versatile. So, I use my satin and sew them a gathered skirt and attach directly to the bodice.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tY0YxDl9bCs/UvJUUs_gHRI/AAAAAAAAEZU/X08xETl0xRI/s1600/SAM_1169-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tY0YxDl9bCs/UvJUUs_gHRI/AAAAAAAAEZU/X08xETl0xRI/s1600/SAM_1169-1.jpg" height="400" width="342" /></a></div>
<br />
The detachable tutu was made up of 4 layers, excluding the inner skirt. I think it makes it more poof and so much more work to gather them! After I gathered all the tutus together, I attach them to a waistband cut from the same fabric as my inner skirt. The waistband is then threaded with elastic so that they can take it off easily.<br />
<br />
For my Big girl, I use pink for first layer, purple for 2nd, white netting for 3rd and pale yellow tulle for 4th layers. The waistband is in purple, same fabric as her purple satin skirt beneath.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-p47J9gcnAuw/UvJOOVwpaVI/AAAAAAAAEYQ/f15PeGKexUU/s1600/SAM_1171-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-p47J9gcnAuw/UvJOOVwpaVI/AAAAAAAAEYQ/f15PeGKexUU/s1600/SAM_1171-1.jpg" height="400" width="252" /></a></div>
<br />
Little sister's tutu skirt is made with Green at top layer, pink on 2nd, white netting for 3rd and pale yellow tulle for the 4th layer. Her waistband is pink satin, same as her satin pink skirt beneath.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GlzWXNRVMz8/UvJPMUZc57I/AAAAAAAAEYc/clb4xxupSwI/s1600/SAM_1162-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GlzWXNRVMz8/UvJPMUZc57I/AAAAAAAAEYc/clb4xxupSwI/s1600/SAM_1162-1.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
The dress without the tutu is just as sweet right? Pardon the crease, I've her tried it on before ironing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-w6reGmVf-ts/UvJP2mFBVpI/AAAAAAAAEYk/Z8WzgN47fys/s1600/SAM_1111-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-w6reGmVf-ts/UvJP2mFBVpI/AAAAAAAAEYk/Z8WzgN47fys/s1600/SAM_1111-1.jpg" height="400" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-w86wbLn82PM/UvJR7e5QLbI/AAAAAAAAEYw/_QbkFssE6dU/s1600/SAM_1119-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-w86wbLn82PM/UvJR7e5QLbI/AAAAAAAAEYw/_QbkFssE6dU/s1600/SAM_1119-1.jpg" height="400" width="296" /></a></div>
<span id="goog_1128150428"></span><span id="goog_1128150429"></span><br />
They love the dresses. So festive and yet versatile. They can wear it without the tutu and it is simple and sweet dress.<br />
<br />
And if they feel like it, the tutu is really swingy and princessy.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xRM0-ZGbS3U/UvJSS8d2p6I/AAAAAAAAEY4/EmsGe2VjKTE/s1600/SAM_1161-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xRM0-ZGbS3U/UvJSS8d2p6I/AAAAAAAAEY4/EmsGe2VjKTE/s1600/SAM_1161-1.jpg" height="400" width="377" /></a></div>
<br />
They got lots of compliments from relatives and friends when we went visitation during the Lunar New Year. Felt so proud as their mama. : )<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-udtRABxUoo4/UvJTPQ_WA2I/AAAAAAAAEZI/k2S6thq5sJM/s1600/SAM_1188-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-udtRABxUoo4/UvJTPQ_WA2I/AAAAAAAAEZI/k2S6thq5sJM/s1600/SAM_1188-1.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
So, did you make any dress for this lunar new year?<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vDSft2Eg7Fc/Uu8EFiiLElI/AAAAAAAAEXA/wvJytTZ3jzE/s1600/SAM_1216-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vDSft2Eg7Fc/Uu8EFiiLElI/AAAAAAAAEXA/wvJytTZ3jzE/s1600/SAM_1216-1.jpg" height="400" width="270" /></a></div>
<br />
Lunar New Year is a celebration of the New Year according to the lunar calendar. Most Chinese around the world celebrate this time with gatherings of families and friends, mixed with good (and overflowing) food and lots of fun, laughter and of course, feasting!<br />
<br />
Usually, we will deck our homes with lots of store bought red decorations but this year, we decided to go DIY. We made the deco hanging on our ceiling with different red packets. It was really fun to do it with the kids. The lantern above is done by my husband. He has fine fingers.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AfPbVrvCsuI/Uu8FOMB3L6I/AAAAAAAAEXM/YuK7B3OCgj0/s1600/SAM_1202-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AfPbVrvCsuI/Uu8FOMB3L6I/AAAAAAAAEXM/YuK7B3OCgj0/s1600/SAM_1202-1.jpg" height="400" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
I did this gold fish. It was hard! The body is made from 4 pieces of red packets and the tail with 3. We had to make a pair. I taught my kids to do it and we have 4!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZyIz1sJSlS4/Uu8GANrTFnI/AAAAAAAAEXU/HcpOqZER5kM/s1600/SAM_1203-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZyIz1sJSlS4/Uu8GANrTFnI/AAAAAAAAEXU/HcpOqZER5kM/s1600/SAM_1203-1.jpg" height="400" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
And of course, we didn't forget the traditional lanterns made from 12 red packets. This is done by my 9 year old. I didn't teach her, she copied from the one we did last year. Smart girl.<br />
<br />
This year, I was focus and did finished up their new year clothes and PJs. More on these in the next post.<br />

<br /></div>
Whew! A month has flew past so quickly. I'm back from my 2 weeks Japan trip and back to reality... Past 2 weeks was wonderful.<br />
<br />
We went from freezing Hokkaido to modern Tokyo to Bayside Yokohama. Experienced skiing, visited the famous Shiroi Kohibito Park and bought music box from Otaru, made a trip to Studio Ghibli, Odaiba's Trick Art Museum, Asakusa and finally Yokohama's Nissin Noodle Museum and Hakone onsen trip etc etc... <br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hU3vg38wRcw/UsGV5s5rWjI/AAAAAAAAEU8/v5br8TOg1hY/s1600/SAM_0543.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hU3vg38wRcw/UsGV5s5rWjI/AAAAAAAAEU8/v5br8TOg1hY/s400/SAM_0543.JPG" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Rusutsu Ski resort</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
The weather in Hokkaido in Winter is no joke. We experienced -5.5 degree celsius. So how did my home-made clothes fare in this cold weather?<br />
<br />
I'm pleased to say that it was holding up well, as my kids says they felt cozy. We just had dinner and they went out of for a while to run in the snow.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uMdGHyzmyw0/UsGWsY4kreI/AAAAAAAAEVQ/fbqdLfxbk-g/s1600/SAM_0457-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uMdGHyzmyw0/UsGWsY4kreI/AAAAAAAAEVQ/fbqdLfxbk-g/s400/SAM_0457-1.jpg" width="340" /></a></div>

<br />
Disclaimer: They had heat-tech inner layer before putting on the sweater. Usually, when its really cold, we add a long sleeve t-shirt and an outer coat. So, 4 layers in total.<br />
<br />
I also made them wool coats using Ottobre patterns from 6-2012.<br />
<br />

<br />
My version.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SSHrpqhDTx0/UsGYbBm4onI/AAAAAAAAEWA/A7D6dolcPN4/s1600/SAM_0916-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SSHrpqhDTx0/UsGYbBm4onI/AAAAAAAAEWA/A7D6dolcPN4/s400/SAM_0916-1.jpg" width="397" /></a></div>

<br />
I interface the pieces according to the pattern instruction. In addition, I also interline them with 3M thinsulate so it was really bulky. I sew them together with the lining pieces and treat them as one piece. Only interline the front, back and sleeve so the sleeve was a bit tight. But the girls love the coats and said it was warmer than the store bought ones : )<br />
<br />
A closer look at the internal of the coats. I used satin for the lining so that it will slip off easier.<br />

<br />
Size 104 suits my almost 4 year old while my older 8 year old is using 134. Even with 3 layers inside, the coat fits, although snug fit.<br />
<br />
Fabric is a wool blend from Fabric.com and the buttons and interfacing were from Textile centres. <br />
<br />
I've learnt a lot from sewing these coats and I think although they are not perfect, I'm really pleased with the outcome. But I don't think we will get a lot of wear since Singapore is so hot! Anyway, the coat cost way lesser than store bought, even though I pour many hours to cut and sew them. It was really a labour of love so I think I will not sew any coats in near future.<br />
<br />
And of course the velour tunic is so pretty.<br />

<br />
I'm still sorting the photos from the trip and I thought of starting a new blog on diy travelling with kids to Japan since I really did a lot of research and travelled quite often to Japan. Let's see how it goes.<br />

A new warm vest for the upcoming holiday in Japan.<br />

<br />
Pattern from Simplicity 1787 size 8. <br />
<br />
The faux fur is from the earlier Neck Warmer project. I've used up most of the 1/2 yard that I got from Fabric.com. It's a pity that I got just 1/2 yard cause it is really soft and furry. The inner layer is micro fleece in lilac.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
Size 8 fits her well and I added the ribbon ties so that the vest will hold together. <br />

Now, I just need to finish up my 3 wool coats and I'm all set for the trip in December!</div>
